There are side hustles that earn you a nice little side income. It might enable you to pay off some bills earlier than normal and buy those shoes you wanted, which all makes you happy. There are side hustles that gain a bit of momentum and you are able to book a little holiday or two then suddenly the holiday of a lifetime. There are side hustles that work so well you are able to leave your 9 to 5 and live the dream. You have a whole new way of life, one that you had only previously dreamt of.
Then there are side hustles that are at best a really good idea. And that’s the ends of that little story.
Big difference huh? I know which paragraph I want to be in and it’s not the second one.
A huge part of a side hustles success is down to you. Your motivation and how you approach the whole thing is really what can change things.
You need to have a focus:
Why are you doing your side hustle? When you know the ‘why’, you have something to focus on. So have a brainstorming session to find your why. You want firm ‘whys’ not wooly ‘to make money’ type of ‘whys’. To keep yourself focused you are going to have to have your whys in your face all the time. Live and breath them so that it keeps you constantly motivated.

Make a list of your whys and all the positives that will come from it. Write it all down. So if you are hustling to earn some extra money to go on a holiday, don’t just write ‘to go on holiday’ but write down all the good things about the holiday. Having time away with your other half, the sunshine on your face or relaxing in the middle of a field in a tent. Whatever floats your boat. Write it down. Maybe your aiming high with a new house. Again don’t just write ‘a new house’. List the positives like a new house will enable me to have an office, my other half will have their own bathroom sink instead of using mine…. get the idea?
Now keep that list on your phone, on the wall by your desk , on the bathroom mirror. Put it everywhere that you will see it.
By constantly reminding yourself of the positive you are more likely to keep your motivation going.
Time is not the issue:
When you first start your hustle you may put up barriers with excuses, like you don’t have enough time. I going to be really blunt here but we all have the same amount of time. We all have the same 24 hours in the same day. What you do with your 24 hours is up to you but if you really want something you will find the time.
It’s all too easy to put things off until another day but if you give yourself actionable and achievable goals you are more likely to get off your arse and do the whatever thing you need to do. This goes for your side hustle stuff but also in other areas in your life because it will all have a knock effect to your side hustle.
Someone once told me that a good way of getting things done is to be a ‘do it’ person. Think of all the things that need doing, write it down if that helps. If it takes less than 5 minutes then instead of writing it down to do another day and make your to-do list look depressingly longer – do it! So if you’re sat in front of some tv programme thinking of all the things that need doing, the ones that are less than 5 minutes – get off the sofa and do them. 10 minutes later you might have completed a whole bunch of things and the tv programme is probably not further along in its plot.
