Yoast works best when you a little bit about SEO. Yoast which you will find at the bottom of each of your posts after you have installed it. It sits there doing no harm so if you don’t use it the world won’t collapse around you. All Yoast is, is a tool to check you have your keyword in places. It is just a checker. If you don’t fill it in all that has happened is you haven’t checked if the keyword you want to target is in the optimal places. And if you don’t know your keywords in the first place then its best to leave it alone.
Soooooo let’s get to a post I put up a few days ago on my site. 70 Blog Post Ideas. You will see in the image that there is a grey dot next to Enter your focus ke…This means I haven’t entered a keyword in, these change colour.
There are also lots of red dots below too. Bad Kairen, I didn’t pay attention to my keywords.
In the next picture, you will see I have put the term blog post ideas into the Focus Keyword box. It then runs its clever little checker and I have some green dots. Green dots are good, they mean things are in the right place. But my red dots are telling me I haven’t specified my meta description (the bit Google shows in search results) and my dentistry is rather low.
Some of the scores don’t update unless you press update on the post, so always do that.
So, I went back to my post and created the meta description and tweaked the wording. I added alt to my picture (this one will be really useful for you as you have a lot of images, afraid another thing to add to your list of must do’s) Each time I tweaked something I would press update for it to run the checker again.
I basically keep going till I get a green dot. See now there is a green dot. And further down my reds have gone green with a few oranges.
It’s saying that although I haven’t got everything right, I have enough that it thinks I have optimised the post enough.
You will also see the dots on the post list page. Greys are the ones you haven’t optimised.
But remember it’s just a checker. If I went back to my post and changed my target phrase to blogging ideas or pink grapefruit I would get red dots again.
